As Windows operating system gets more and more complicated, there are also a lot of troubleshooting steps that a computer technician will have to learn. From my experience, one of the most effective method to learn and remember how to fix a computer problem is to purposely break it and then try to figure out the solution before looking for it in Google. We may not be able to learn and memorize all of them which is why automated solutions by utilities such as Windows Repair and FixWin that are easy to use can be a great time saver. Another utility that should be added to the list is Fix it which is created by Microsoft. You can search for the Fix it tool from the official Fix it website to help solve the problem on your computer but here is how you can download the portable offline version of Microsoft Fix it utility so you can use it on computer that is without an active Internet connection.
1. First download the small MicrosoftFixit-portable.exe file which is 339KB in size from the link at the end of this article and run it.
2. Click the Accept button to agree to the terms.
3. Choose the location where you want to save the Fix it portable tool. It is best to leave the option “The computer already has Windows PowerShell installed” unchecked.
4. Click the Save button and the tool will start to download the necessary files to the location that you’ve specified at step 3.
5. When the download has been completed, click the Finish button to close the downloader.
Go to the folder where you’ve saved the downloaded Microsoft Fix it Portable and you will find an autorun.inf file together with a Fix it portable folder. You can copy the Fix it portable folder to a USB flash drive and then run the “Launch Fix it.exe” from the folder on the computer that has the problem. If the problem on the computer matches one of the description from the Microsoft Fix it utility, click the Run Now button to launch the automated fixing tool.
What you may not know and many other websites don’t tell you is that the offline version of Microsoft Fix it utility is actually a mini version of the online Microsoft Fix it. The offline version of Fix it only contains 26 troubleshooters taken from the top solutions category while the online version has few hundreds of them. If you don’t believe me, go to Microsoft Fix it Solution Center, click on Windows for the problem area and then select All Windows problem areas. Scroll to the bottom of the page and you will see “1-10 of 232 Results”… Other than that, the offline Microsoft Fix it utility also lacks of search function but I guess that is not necessary since it is not that hard to find if there is a troubleshooter to fix the problem on the computer.
Nevertheless, the portable offline Microsoft Fix it tool can be quite useful to computer technicians to help fix computer problems since they contain automated troubleshooters for some of the most common problems in Windows.
