Minishorts: Putting the ‘sweet’ in ‘home sweet home’

It's almost three weeks since we moved to the new place, and truth be told, I've been struggling really hard to call this 'home'. The other day, I was on my way home with Paul sleeping in the back seat, and I arrived at the old place which we rented for two years – only to realize that I didn't have the keys to enter the place any more.

Now don't get me wrong, because the new place is far better than where we used to stay. At the very least, it is truly ours – not rented, so we both decided on every detail in it, what furniture to buy, what lights to install, what brand of appliances to purchase, and including the compromises. We argued incessantly whenever our opinions clashed, and I remember two occasions where we went to Ikea, and halfway through the shopping spree we were both so exasperated with each other, we left the place in silence, giving each other the silent treatment.

By nature, Eric and I are both hard-headed, extremely stubborn people. To make things worse, our characters are really opposites of each other, so whenever we argue, it gets REALLY BAD, and sometimes if you were caught in between the fire, you'd wonder how the heck did they get together in the first place. Remember, opposites always attract so that they can complete each other.

But I've digressed. The truth is, as I was saying, this is a HARD place to call home, for me. It's nearly 20 kilometres from both our moms. It's 20 kilometres away from the neighborhood where Eric and I both grew up. I used to stay in Overseas Union Garden (OUG) for a good 20 odd years of my life, and until I got married to Eric, we moved to Damansara Perdana, where it was very close to 1 Utama and The Curve/Ikea/IPC. Then when we moved back to OUG, it was at the very least, to stay closer to our mothers, and life was so much easier and convenient. I guess, all my life I have lived close to conveniences and the city was never more than 10 minutes drive away! Now, all of a sudden, we've moved into a whole new, unknown territory, and with a neighbor who is nearly never at home, and several empty homes next to ours, I'm terribly, terribly home sick.

Am not sure how to put the 'sweet' in 'home sweet home' these days.
